Basic Dental Care at Home
January 23rd, 2012
Taking care of not only your teeth, but your mouth as well is extremely important to take care of and keep in top working condition. Your mouth is susceptible to many different kinds of problems due to the immense amount of bacteria that can thrive there. One thing that is a top priority is to make sure that you are taking proper care of your teeth as many problems can come up if they are not taken care of properly such as cavities, infections, gingivitis and many others.
The first step in taking proper care of your teeth is simply brushing your teeth. Dentists will always recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, maybe even more. When you brush your teeth properly, the toothbrush is meant to remove any plaque that has made its residence on the surface of your teeth. Picking out a toothbrush is not nearly as important as picking out the right toothpaste, as it can come in many different types. Some toothpastes fight tartar better than others while some toothpastes are meant for sensitive teeth, the important thing to remember is that the toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride is one of the most common ingredients used in toothpaste to fight cavities.
Another important step that you can actively follow at home is to simply use floss. Dental floss is essentially a ribbon made of either plastic or nylon that is used to remove any excess food or plaque that your toothbrush may have missed when you brushed your teeth. When using floss, cut a length of floss and insert it in between your teeth and move it in and out, this is the motion that removes any excess debris left in between the teeth. There are many different makers of floss, but there really is not a rule of thumb to follow when buying floss. The only thing that you may want to consider is whether or not you want regular floss or flavored floss.
Brushing and flossing are two of the easiest ways you can take care of your teeth right from your very own home. Added protection can be achieved through other means such as mouthwash and even water. Mouthwash can help remove excess plaque and tartar from your teeth. If you plan on using a mouthwash, make sure that is has fluoride in it, this is what helps remove the bulk of tartar and plaque. Most cities also add fluoride to the drinking water to help tooth care, but some cities do not. If you live in a city that does not incorporate fluoride into the drinking water, then a mouthwash would be a good option.
No one should have to suffer the burden of having to have a dentist drill his or her way through a problem that may come up. To prevent this from happening, all you have to do is take a few simple steps such as brushing and flossing. Both of these things can be done from the convenience of your home, saving you time and money while adding a bit of convenience. So simply brush your teeth at least twice a day and use floss and you will be saving yourself a trip to the dentist.
